One Small Victory For CBGB’s

The legendary punk club CBGB’s has made a small victory in their fight to keep their doors open for business. Although the fate of their lease is still unknown, a civil court judge ruled yesterday that they couldn’t be evicted from their current location. The judge said the club should not be punished for not noticing that it owed its landlord money.

A copy of Judge Joan Kennedy’s ruling was submitted to AP News, which read: “CBGB has proven itself worthy of being recognized as a landmark — a rare achievement for any commercial tenant in the ever diverse and competitive real estate market of New York City. It would be unconscionable for this court to allow petitioner to proceed with its intent to evict CBGB … because it failed to notice that monies were outstanding for approximately four years.”

While this is great news, the future of CBGB’s is still up in the air, as their lease with the Bowery Residents’ Committee expires on August 31. To find out what you can do to help save this rock & roll landmark, head over to www.savecbgb.org.
