Louisville, Kentucky-based, classic-rock-inspired outfit My Morning Jacket will release their new album, Z, on October 4 through RCA/ATO. Luckily for me, I’ve been able to spend some considerable time with the record over the past few weeks and while it came with some copy protection that prevented me from putting it into my iTunes (or playing it in my car), it’s good enough that I went out of my way to listen to it about three times a day for the last month. Yes, it really is that good. Z, the band’s fourth studio album, finds frontman Jim James ditching the chorus-drenched vocals that have become his trademark. On a good portion of the record, James’ vocals are almost completely clean, making for a more intimate experience for the listener and a welcome change that sets Z apart from the band’s past efforts.
On October 6, just two days after the release of the new album, MMJ will embark on an extensive North American tour. Beginning in Atlanta, GA, the tour will crisscross the continent, hitting Canada, the East Coast, Midwest and West Coast before wrapping up with back to back nights at the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco.
