Pearl Jam’s Bootleg Series Goes Digital

Remember that whole Pearl Jam bootleg series thing? Beginning in 2000, they released a billion CDs with minimal packaging, each one of which captured a different gig on the band’s tour. These high quality, commercially-available, reasonably-priced “bootlegs” were deemed a success (selling over three million copies to date) and relieved all those tape-trading hippies from their duties of standing as close to the stage as they can with a pair of microphones on a stick. You know you’ve seen ‘em! Well now, Eddie Vedder and company are one-upping themselves by bringing their bootleg series into the new millennium. Beginning with their sold-out show at the Gorge in Washington State on September 1, Pearl Jam will begin releasing high quality digital downloads of their shows via their website. The “digital bootlegs” will be available for most of the band’s North American tour dates just hours after each show, so fans with wi-fi can re-live the magic of each evening’s show even before their “buzz” wares off on the ride home. Each “bootleg” will be professionally mixed in real time, will each include unique downloadable artwork and will not contain DRM (Digital Rights Management). So dust off your flannel shirt and get ready to rock!
