Ever since I happened upon a series of demo recordings that Matt Pond recorded in preparation for his last album, Emblems, a special place in my heart has been reserved just for him. Those extremely raw recordings showed Matt Pond PA principal and namesake Matt Pond at his most vulnerable. The stripped down songs allowed Pond’s haunting vocals and thoughtful lyrics of love lost and found to shine through in resounding clarity. At the time, I was spending a great deal of time in the car commuting and those demos literally kept me from going insane. Since then, I have gone back and bought all of his previous albums and started preaching the gospel of Matt Pond PA to all that will listen. On October 11, the band will release their fifth studio album via Altitude Records. Called Several Arrows Later, it is perhaps the band’s most accessible album to date and likely the record that will take the band from underground cult hero status to full fledged stars.
Pond has lined up two high-profile tours to ensure that the band’s stock continues to rise. On October 6, Matt Pond PA will hit the road with Liz Phair for a 15-date tour, followed immediately after by a trek with Guster. For twenty-eight dates total, Matt Pond PA will be touring the Midwest, Canada and East Coast. If one of these dates is in your town (or near your town), I highly recommend going to check them out. Get there early.
