Radiohead’s Latest Groundbreaking Announcement: They Like Dub

Stop the presses! Jonny Greenwood likes dub! Whenever Radiohead makes an announcement of any kind, such as Thom Yorke likes vanilla ice cream cones, or Colin Greenwood likes to take naps during thunderstorms, the press goes apeshit. Although I could make some snide remark that the media needs to chill out, I am just as guilty for scouring every day for any nugget of Radiohead news.

So yes, multi-instrumentalist Jonny Greenwood seems to have fallen in love with dub. In a recent post on his blog, he wrote that he has been listening to “six solid months of nothing but Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Ken Boothe, Junior Byles, Marcia Aitkin and hundreds of others. It’s to make a compilation which may or may not ever be completed – I hope I’m not just proving a point to myself – but either way, there’s been nothing else on my iPod since April.” Will his new infatuation with dub bleed over to the sound of the new Radiohead album? Stranger things have happened.

He also commented that the band is back in the studio working on their new album. He said that everything is “fun and well”, so hopefully we’ll see the release of their follow-up to Hail To The Thief in the next year or so. Even their resident artist Stanley Donwood has been hard at work. Greenwood commented the he is “in the shed out back, painting again. The rats have got in and eaten all his blue paint, and there’s blue rat shit everywhere: but at least he’s got a good dub cd to listen to while he’s working.”
