The M’s Ink Deal With Polyvinyl Records

When Windy City darlings The M’s released their self-titled debut album last year, those of us that are involved with the Chicago music scene couldn’t be more excited. We got the same feeling that one gets when their hometown sports team makes it deep into the playoffs (you can tell I’m a Cubs fan, since simply making it to the playoffs is reason enough to rejoice). When a band comes along that brings national exposure to our beloved city’s music scene (and there have been quite a few lately), we all do a little dance. Most of us probably do our jig within the confines of our conscious mind, but I think I may have actually done the moonwalk the first time I heard The M’s. They went on to open for some of the biggest bands that came through town, including Wilco, Spoon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Broken Social Scene, seeming to get better with each performance.

The M’s – Josh Chicoine, Robert Hicks, Joey King and Steve Versaw – have been working on their sophomore album all summer long at Chicago’s Semaphone Studio, but for some time the question remained, “who would release it?” Well that very important question has finally been answered. Champaign, IL-based indie label Polyvinyl Records, home to Of Montreal, Minus The Bear, Mates Of State, Paris, Texas and more, has officially singed a deal with The M’s to release their new album. “We were blown away with The M’s debut album and seeing them live completely won us over,” said Polyvinyl co-pres Matt Lunsford. “We believe The M’s are making music that people will still be talking about twenty years from now.”

Look for The M’s yet-to-be-titled new album in early 2006, with a tour to follow.
