How long did you think we could wait until posting a Libertines-related story? Today marks our first update for 2005, and Carl Barat is already back in the news. As reported last month, Barat formed a supergroup featuring The Charlatans’ Tim Burgess, Primal Scream’s Martin Duffy, and Razorlight’s Andy Burrows. The group is named The Chavs, at least for the time being. According to XFM, another group named The Chavs claims that they beat Barat to that name when their band formed nearly two years ago. The “original” Chavs are currently seeking legal advice to help prevent the supergroup from using the name.
Singer Tom Urzi told XFM that Barat’s group are “peddlers of naff indie and we’re purveyors of quality rock.” Urzi also commented that he would be interested in having a battle of the bands, The Chavs vs. The Chavs. Fans would then vote on which band gets to keep the name. I vote for the battle to be held in an iron cage and broadcast as a Pay Per View special, with Hulk Hogan as the referee. If I was a betting man, I would put my money on Barat-Burgess-Duffy-Burrows. Arrrre you rrrready to ruuumble?
