John Peel’s Music Library To Stay With His Family

The late John Peel’s amazing music library looks like it will be staying with his family. There was speculation that his massive record collection would go to the British Library, but BBC World Service is now reporting that Peel’s family will not be parting with the vast catalog.

The legendary DJ’s widow Sheila Ravenscroft said that the records “are John”, making it impossible for her to part with them at this point. She said: “At the moment, I’ve no intention of doing anything with his records. The records here are John and I can’t imagine how we all would feel if, for whatever reason, they were suddenly removed from us. It would be just awful. At the moment, it makes us feel rather good that they’re all here. And we play them.”

Peel’s music library is estimated at around 26,000 vinyl albums, 40,000 singles and 40,000 CDs. With a collection of that size, Ravenscroft admits that one say she will have to give them up. “I’ve got to be realistic and I know that there will be some period when we’ve got to say ‘Come on, be sensible’, because there’s no way we can play them all or appreciate them all. But it won’t be happening yet,” she said.
