José González + 500,000 Super Balls + San Fran = Gorgeous

Recently, a friend passed along a link to a European ad for a new Sony TV. The commercial features 500,000 super balls tumbling down the hills of San Francisco. Shot beautifully, the ad introduces viewers to the gentle sweetness of Swedish singer/songwriter/guitarist José González, who’s cover of fellow Swedish band The Knife’s song “Heartbeats” provides the soundtrack. It’s probably the most beautiful and captivating ad I’ve ever seen and José González… well, he’s simply incredible. Playing the acoustic guitar with the skill of a classically trained musician, his voice is at once haunting and passionate, elegant and peaceful.

González’s debut album, Veneer, is available now from Hidden Agenda/Parasol, who will also release the new Stay In The Shade EP in January. Mute will then release González’s next album in mid-’06. He will be in the US in March for a tour that will include a stop at this year’s SXSW.

Here’s a link to the Sony TV ad. It takes a little while to load, but it’s worth it.

Enjoy.
