Social phenomenon MySpace has just announced plans to launch a new cell phone service that will allow users to read and post to the site for free. According to MSNBC, the service will launch in a few months with two compatible phones, the “Hero” and the “Kickflip.” Neither phone will have a QWERTY keyboard, which might make posting slightly more challenging, or at the very least, will increase the amount of grammatical errors and misspellings (not that anyone really cares).
The company bringing this to market is called Helio, LLC, a joint venture between Internet service provider Earthlink Inc. and South Korean carrier SK Telecom Co. SK owns the Korean equivalent of MySpace (Cyworld), which is equally as popular with South Korean youth and can already be accessed via cell phones.
Helio won’t have it’s own cellular network, so its users will instead buy access to pre-existing providers like Sprint and/or Verizon. As of today, there is no official launch date, but we’ll let you know.
