Vice Curates Intonation Festival 2006

With Pitchfork announcing their own Chicago summer music festival earlier this year, I’m fairly certain that many fans of last year’s wildly successful Intonation Music Festival assumed that the latter had gone the way of the dodo. However, in a somewhat confusing situation, the Intonation Festival lives on! We’re not sure exactly how it all boiled down, but the way it’s being spun is that last year’s festival was merely curated by Pitchfork and that the intention all along was for it to be a one-time deal. Works for me, but that means, of course, that some other indie-tastic entity must be called in to curate the 2006 edition of the IMF.

Enter Vice Records. The label that gave birth to Bloc Party, The Stills, Death From Above 1979, and The Streets, to name a few, will curate this year’s event. Not coincidentally, two of their bands will be headlining the two day indie rock love fest – Bloc Party and The Streets.

Though IMF will be held at the same location as last year (Union Park), there are a few other changes besides the whole ‘curated by’ thing. For one, it will be taking place on June 24 and 25. Last year’s late summer scheduling made for one of the HOTEST festival events in the history of mankind (and not the good kind of hot). So 2006 should be a much cooler experience all the way around. This year will also see the introduction of new sponsor KEXP. It’s sad for Chicago that the city doesn’t have a viable alternative station that would able to pull off a IMF sponsorship without turing it into a giant suckfest, but until they do, the epitome of indie-tastic programming perfection, KEXP, is a perfect match and I’m sure they’ll be welcomed with open arms.

Tickets will go on sale Monday, March 13 – $20 (single day), $35 (two day).

More bands will be announced soon.
