As I have mentioned countless times before, I am a Texan transplanted in NYC. I keep tabs on music news from the Lone Star State from my good friends that still live in Dallas/Fort Worth and Austin. This morning one of them tipped me off to a recent development with Bill’s Records, which has been one of America’s greatest independent music stores.
I spent many afternoons rummaging through Bill’s Records, spending what little money I had on collectable vinyl from The Cure, Radiohead and other various artists I happened to be obsessed with during high school and college. Bill’s is a museum of music memorabilia, collected from the store’s 25 years of existence. The 8,000 square foot location gave music fans a place to dig through rare vinyl and the latest import CDs for hours upon hours.
With the growing trend of online music sales, music storeowners have been struggling to keep their doors open as kids turn to the internet rather than brick and mortar locations. Bill’s Records has been feeling the effects of declining music sales, almost forcing the store to close its doors. Fortunately, owner Bill Wisener has found a new, much smaller location. Less than half the size of the current store, the legendary original location on Spring Valley Road will be no more as of January 31.
