Beck Goes Gangsta

As previously reported, Beck has a new album on the way. With Nigel Godrich at the helm, we were hoping for something in the vein of his brilliant album Sea Change. Well, it doesn’t look like that will be the case. In a recent interview with MTV, Beck discussed the sound of the new record, which will feature predominantly hip hop tracks.

About deciding the direction of the as-yet-untitled album, he said: “Before we started, Nigel said he wanted to do a hip-hop record. And in a way it is, and in a way it isn’t. It has hip-hop songs, and my previous work with him was Mutations and Sea Change, these sort of introspective records, and so this new one is sort of bringing those two worlds together.”

One interesting aspect of the album will be its artwork. It sounds pretty amazing. “The artwork is laid out in stickers, it’s modular, the cover is blank and you get a sheet of stickers and you make your own cover,” he said.

New songs will include “Soldier Jane,” “Nausea” and “1000 BPM.”
