Normally I don’t follow a band around during a tour, hopping from city to city to catch as many shows as possible. Granted I have yet to escalate my obsession with Radiohead to the level of a Dead Head or whatever you call a Phish fanatic, but by the end of their current tour I will have caught them three times. Last night was show number two for me, with their first sold-out evening at the Madison Square Garden Theatre in New York.
Rather than give you a blow-by-blow recap of the show as I did for their opening night in Philly, I’ll just hit a few bullet points. Their twenty-three song set once again kicked off with “You & Whose Army, ” then erupting into a bombastic rendition of “National Anthem.” Although I heard several of the new songs previously at the Tower Theatre, last night featured two I had yet to experience: “Videotape” and “Down Is The New Up”.
Thom was in one hell of a mood throughout the evening, kidding around with the audience from time to time. Ah yes, and we got to enjoy more of the infamous Thom dance during songs such as “Kid A” and “Idioteque.” There were a few more oldies mixed in this time round, with “Fake Plastic Trees,” “Climbing Up The Walls,” “Lucky” and “The Bends.” Yorke had a big grin on his face during the opening chords of “The Bends,” which is cool to see that he still enjoys playing some of their earlier material.
It is really hard to pinpoint what I would consider the highlights of the evening. Radiohead really does no wrong, so the entire two-hour set was mighty impressive. “Lucky” was a real treat, and “How To Disappear Completely” was a brilliant way to end the set.
I’ll do a more complete recap after tonight’s show. I am keeping my fingers crossed for “Paranoid Android” and “Just.” Ya never know!
