Austin: David Vandervelde @ Levi’s/FADER Fort

An expectant crowd gathered to catch youngster David Vandervelde, who returned this afternoon from his recent UK tour to try and justify some of the hype that has been accompanying his name as of late. And despite having to play with a fresh crew, this “rehearsal” was just as satisfying as buzz has let on.

The throwback T.Rex/Bowie sound of the record translated a bit differently to the live stage, with the four-piece sounding a bit more reminiscent of a Southern Rock outfit. The Chicago-based Vandervelde didn’t disappoint though, and his cover of Rolling Stone’s “Cocksucker Blues” turned out to be the highlight of the set. Other notables included “Jacket” and “Nothin’ No.”
