Hype And The Bands That It Hurts

Oh hype, how we love to hate. Now more than ever with the internet it seems like bands are hyped to the extreme. Hell, some sites throw up a new band every day and go as far as to tell them to quit their day job, only for the next day to come and they are just a flash in the pan. That’s one of the reasons we started our On The Cover series, spotlighting groups and giving them a little longer than the one-15-minutes-now-15-seconds normality.

In a new blog entry on The Guardian this exact topic is dissected and names are called out. For example, remember Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Beirut? Here is what it had to say about them, “Now the internet is such well-trodden territory, death by blog-hype is becoming de rigueur. Both Beirut and Clap Your Hands Say Yeah had been called the indie second coming, and enforced an A&R policy of “Sign anything above an eight in Pitchfork” that caused certain bands to be picked up and dispensed with very quickly. Beirut’s poor live performances were his death knell while Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s second album was (perhaps unfairly) dismissed.”
