When our beloved Radiohead announced that they were releasing their latest album, In Rainbows, on their own, it looked like we were catching a potential glimpse of the future of the music biz. Although the “name your own price” online downloads is still an impressive step, the lads have abandoned the notion of going without a record label.
The band’s management spoke about this on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme (via Gigwise), citing that they had less than one week to secure a record deal. Manager Chris Hufford said: “We’ve got about seven days to sort it out. We tend to fly by the seat of our pants. The band think they [are] incredibly proud of this record and feel that it deserves to be brought into the mass marketplace. That’s why we need a record company who have that infrastructure to deliver the CD.”
So the big question is, who will it be? Will they go back to their longtime label home of EMI? Perhaps they’ll move over to XL Recordings, who released Thom Yorke’s solo album The Eraser? Looks like we’ll find out any day now.
