Longtime drummer Steve Hewitt, who has been with Placebo for eleven years, has officially quit the band. He joined in 1996 when the band was promoting their eponymous debut release, replacing Robert Schultzberg. With Hewitt out, this leaves the band as a duo, as Brian Molko and Stefan Olsdal are in no hurry to find a new drummer.
Molko has voice his opinion on Hewitt’s departure, stating: “Being in a band is very much like being in a marriage, and in couples – in this case a triple – people can grow apart over the years. To say that you don’t love your partner anymore is inaccurate, considering all that you’ve been through and achieved together. There simply comes a point when you realize that you want different things from your relationship and that you can no longer live under the same roof, so to speak.”
Placebo’s official site states that the split was “amicable” and is a “sad time for both parties.” Molko and Olsdal are currently taking a break after wrapping up their recent US tour with My Chemical Romance and Linkin Park, and will begin work on their sixth studio album next spring.
