We’ve been keeping an eye on the Athens, GA trio The Whigs. Their self-released and self-financed debut, Give ‘Em All A Big Fat Lip, was recorded on equipment that they purchased (and then promptly sold afterwords) on eBay. When you’re on a college budget, which was one hell of a great way to get the job done.
These days, recording budgets are no longer an issue. After making various music publications cream their pants, the fellas were picked up by ATO Records, who partnered them up with producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith), to record their follow-up album, Mission Control. The album is currently scheduled for release on January 22, and we’ve got a hunch that this one is going to be big. You can get a sample of their new tunes while the guys tour over the next couple of months. They kick some serious ass live, so do yourself a favor and catch ‘em if they happen to stop in your town.
