“The Smiths are reuniting!” Yeah, whatever. We have all heard that from someone or read it somewhere at one point. From rumors that Johnny and Moz would kiss and make up at Coachella past, or random other gigs, we have heard it until our faces turn blue. It’s not to say that we would be against it, think of how awesome it would be to hear “Hand In Glove” again live by the original band. However, the fact remains that the likelihood of this happening EVER is pretty slim to none. Get over it, I have and so should you.
The point of this is that upon perusing through some normal sites this morning I ran across this piece from The Manchester Evening News claiming that a credible source has leaked super-secret information that The Smiths are to be inducted into the Rock’N'Roll Hall Of Fame in 2008. The paper’s “spies” (as they call them) stated that not only would the band be honored in a lavish ceremony, but that the entire band may make the trip out for it. If this is the case, this will be the first time that all four members have set foot in public, together, on the same stage, since their infamous split in 1987. The tipster claimed that bassist Andy Rourke commented, “You never know what may happen. I don’t know if we’ll all go over there for the induction or not. It might just be Morrissey with three cardboard cut-outs. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”
The official inductees have yet to be announced until later this year, but if The Smiths make the list it will be pretty amazing. As for me, I’m not holding my breath for this one, but a girl can dream. To be eligible for induction at the Rock’N'Roll Hall of Fame, it must have been 25 years since the release of the artist’s first record. Who would you you like to see go in next year?
