It has been a while since Tricky’s name has been mentioned in the music news world, but that is about to end. The UK trip hop vocalist/musician got his career rolling with his appearances on Massive Attack’s Blue Lines and Protection. In 1995 he embarked on a solo career, including his groundbreaking Maxinquaye, which yielded a Tripwire favorite, an amazing cover of Public Enemy’s “Black Steel” featuring Martina Topley-Bird.
According to Mollifire’s blog, Tricky will be releasing a new album titled Knowle West Boy, named after the neighborhood he grew up in. The new disc will hit stores via his own label, Brown Punk, which he formed with Chris Blackwell (Island Records / Bob Marley). He teamed up with Switch, who you might remember from M.I.A.’s Kala album, which should make for an interesting production collaboration.
Tricky has posted a few unfinished tracks on his MySpace page, although it is unclear if any of these will appear on the new album. For a bit of flashback fun, here is that “Cold Steel” video in all of its badass glory. Enjoy!
