I have a love/hate relationship with A-Trak. I fully appreciate his insane DJ abilities (see video below), his musical prowess and the fact he launched a very forward-thinking label in Fool’s Gold. But on the flip side, he does so much commercial bullshit that I’ve started to question his motives. I guess every musician who reaches a point of financial success crosses that bridge at some point in their lives, but aren’t Canadians supposed to be less capitalistic than their brethren to the south?
Maybe that’s why when I see a list of tourdates he’s doing, I’m more drawn to the dates with Santogold because they seem less like a business endeavor than those with Boys Noize (he’ll be releasing his “Say Whoa” 12″ remixed by Boys Noize on the French imprint Kitsuné this October). See what I mean? Touring in support of a record is nothing strange – in fact, it’s quite normal. So then why do I feel kind of dirty about it? All my cynicism aside, there is one thing I can unequivocally say with complete sincerity – these shows are going to be sick – especially the show in Tokyo with Soulwax and LCD Soundsystem. Tell kids to get their glow sticks ready.
