Portugal The Man Are Alaskans With Words For Sarah Palin

Normally, we try to stay away from politics. Like most everyone, we have our opinions, but we try to keep them pointed strictly on the music. At least that way if we’re wrong (cough, cough), we don’t jeopardize people’s lives. However, when a band has a political opinion, that allows us the opportunity to spread out wings like the bald eagle of patriotism without ever having to claim responsibility. It’s win-win baby!

To be fair, John Gourley of Portugal The Man is from Alaska, so his opinions regarding Sarah Palin and her small town, hockey-mom rhetoric “hit home” so to speak. As he recently posted on the PTM blog, “All through my smaller years, from a boy through to a man, I have known true Alaskans. People who hunted for a living. By “a living” I should be sure to mean “for survival” or “as a necessity… Something along those lines… It was just a part of life growing up here in Alaska. People hunt, people work, people live, and fish and sleep and work and work and work and so on.”

We won’t bore you with the details here, as it’s actually a very in-depth and thought provoking read that has inspired upwards of 70 comments since it was posted last week. It might have something to do with drumming up interest in the release of their new record Censored Colors next week on Equal Vision, but the story is so personal, we’re going to go out on a limb and chok it up to sincerity. So regardless of your political leanings, we suggest you take a moment to read how John Gourley relates his first hunting trip to Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
