Cool Ass Video – Wild Beasts “Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants”

I’ve seen Wild Beasts perform live. I’ve heard their upcoming debut Limbo, Panto. I’ve even had the chance to share a few brief words with them, they’re nice guys. Yet I still can’t come to a solid opinion when it comes to their music. It’s like David Byrne, New Order, The Darkness and Queen all spawned a mutant child. Cool? Yes. Something you want to listen to all the time? Eh… This much I do know however; their video for the single “Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants” is one of the coolest videos I’ve seen in a long time.

Directed by OneInThree for the Beasts’ second single off their Domino debut pioneers a visual technique called the Droste Effect, which is based on an uncompleted lithograph that artist MC Escher made in 1956. The math behind the lithograph was rumored to be so complicated that Escher was unable to finish the center of the picture and so he left it blank. OneInThree developed the technique from photographer Josh Sommers’ code so that it could be applied to moving images.

Needless to say, the result is stunning and one that deserves to be up for a VMA next year – anything to avoid another year of Kid Rock, Kanye and Britney.
