On The Cover – The Whigs

WEEK ONE: PHOTO GALLERY

Of the list of bands to watch out for in ‘08, The Whigs are by far one of the most exciting. We first heard of this Athens, GA band with their 2005 self-release full-length, Give ‘Em All A Big Fat Lip. It was a bare-boned blast of kick ass indie rock, which instantly sent the music press into a frenzy. The fact that the guys recorded that album in a frat house on the campus of the University of Georgia with their own equipment simply blew our minds. We knew it was only a matter of time before they snagged a record deal.

In July of 2006, The Whigs found a home on ATO Records, which re-released Fat Lip, put the guys on the road, then put the guys in a proper studio to work on their sophomore album. Parker Gispert (vocals, guitar, keys), Julian Dorio (drums) and Tim Deux (bass, backing vocals) found themselves in the legendary Hollywood Sunset Sound Studios in July of 2007 with producer Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Guided By Voices). The results of these sessions yielded Mission Control, an album that is destined to put these Georgia Peaches firmly on the indie rock map.

Their sound is a killer mix of garage rock, indie pop and Southern twang, with big guitars and catchy hooks that make Mission Control one of the first standout albums of the New Year. We’ve got plenty more to share about this Athens-based Trio, but for now check out our photo gallery below. You can also get a sample of their new tunes by visiting the band’s MySpace page, which contains two of our favorites, “Right Hand On My Heart” and “Like A Vibration.”

Mission Control will be released on January 22.
