Leona Lewis’s Snow Patrol Cover Breaks Digital Download Record In UK

Leona Lewis — you know, the British chick who sings that song about how she keeps bleeding, and she just keeps on and keeps on and keeps on — has broken the digital download record in the UK with her cover of Snow Patrol’s “Run.”

Lewis’s version of the song has been downloaded around 70,000 times since it first became available as a digital single on Sunday (Nov. 30), making it the fastest-selling digital-only track in the UK, according to BBC News. “Run” beat Estelle’s “American Boy,” which held the record with 51,857 downloads in its first week. Both Estelle and Lewis are nominated in top tier Grammy categories, Estelle for Song of the Year with “American Boy” and Lewis for Record of the Year with “Bleeding Love.”

Lewis’s version of “Run” is expected to go No. 1 on the UK singles chart this Sunday, and the attention surrounding the song has led to Snow Patrol’s original recording of the song (released in 2003) taking its place on the charts again from downloads alone. After Lewis performed the song on the Nov. 15 episode of The X-Factor, the UK show that discovered her, her label initially did not plan to release it as a single, reportedly because they wanted fans to spend the extra money to buy the re-release of Lewis’s album Spirit, which had the track included as a bonus feature. Now that it’s set to go No. 1, they’re probably enjoying their crow.
