For The Fan Who Has Everything: An Indie Rock Cookbook

If you’re looking for the perfect gift for the foodie/indie rocker in your life, someone up there seriously loves you. Out this fall through Soft Skull Press comes Lost in the Supermarket: An Indie Rock Cookbook.

With chapters like “Potlucky” and “The World Tour,” the musical theme is intact throughout and the recipes come from all over the indiesphere. From Mr. Both’s Homemade Tomato Juice (Alcohol Optional) courtesy of The Spinto Band to Thai Sweet Potato Soup from Belle and Sebastian, Greek shrimp from Animal Collective and even Yorkshire Pudding from Chumbawumba. You can find out how to make Italian Wedding Soup from Sonic Youth, pasta sauce from The Dresden Dolls, Christmas Cheese from Corn Mo and “Fly Soup” (under the heading “You’re Not Going To Eat That Are You?”) from Antony and the Johnsons.

The book was compiled by sociologists Kay Bozich Owens and Lynn Owens, who, according to the book jacket, believe that cooking for yourself (while listening to indie music?) is actually another way to keep your life in “the underground.”

Music and food do more than define groups; they also define selves. The old standby, “You are what you eat,” has been updated by the youth culture mantra, “You are who you listen to.” But it is as much about becoming who you want to be as it is about being who you are. If music marks the first coming of age, it is food and cooking that often marks the next major milestone: living on one’s own. Traditionally, this has been the moment in which people get pulled back into the mainstream and settle down into domestic bliss. But as food becomes increasing corporate and commodified, cooking for oneself offers a viable way to continue one’s life in the underground.

Lost in the Supermarket is available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble and, of course, Soft Skull.
