Live - She & Him @ Webster Hall | NYC

Y’all ever seen Coal Miner’s Daughter? Well, if you haven’t, it’s a damn fine thang. One of those Walk The Line bios that everyone was talking about a few years back, only in Coal Miner’s Daughter, you don’t get freaking Reese Witherspoon playing June Carter, you got that Sissy Spacek running around pretending she’s Loretta Lynn. At some point in Coal Miner’s Daughter, you forget that Sissy Spacek is acting as Loretta Lynn and you go on this wild adventure of amazing ’60s and ’70s Appalachia, country dresses, big hair, alcoholism, over-populating the world with children, Tommy Lee Jones as Boo and National Lampoons’ style Patsy Cline. You live in that movie and forget it’s a true story. You get caught up of the idea and fantasy of being a country music star. We all love Loretta Lynn, that’s no doubt, but the reason that movie is so damn fine is because it could be about anyone. It’s a fantasy world. One that Ms. Lynn was fortunate enough to live in. Anyway, I’m guessing that Zoey Deschanel likes that movie too.

I went and saw Zoey and M. Ward be She & Him last night at Webster Hall in New York. Damn fine affair, it really was. I wasn’t so sure of the idea a few weeks back, but after someone nails a country version of “You Really Got A Hold On Me”, can you have anything bad to say about them? Well, they did miss the “Ida” part, but the answer to that is most definitely no. Zoey gone done and lost her voice last night, so she relied on posters to talk to the crowd in between songs. That just added to how damn likable she is. The show was quick, full of sugary country tunes, minor 4s and head spinning Wurlitzer. Zoey rocked through 45 minutes of her best Coal Miner’s Daughter, making the crowd believe that as much as she was up there being Sissy Spacek, we didn’t give a shit. We got caught up in the songs. If you don’t like She & Him, that’s silly. They ain’t trying to rule the world. Cause here in Topeka the screen door’s a bangin’, the coffee’s boilin’ over and the wash needs a hangin’, one wants a cookie and one wants a changin’ and one’s on the way.

I tried as hard as I could not to get caught up with WHO was on stage last night and focus on WHAT was coming from the speakers. I tried. I did. I couldn’t help it.
