Here’s an idea – instead of muting the videos, attach to the clip an advertisement for the artist or related music and products – hey, maybe even somewhere where someone can actually purcahse a quality copy of the video! For example, I received a copyright notice for my video remix of the Dangermouse remix of “99 Problems” with the original video.

But the notice did not tell me that it was going to be muted or removed, but that the record company reserved the right to advertise where the video was played. Muting the videos is just going to cut off yet another popular way for people to discover music and add another nail to the coffin of the record companies.
