R.I.P. – L.A.’s Indie 103.1 Goes Off Air Today

indie_1031

With little notice besides a message on their homepage, Indie 103, L.A.’s independent rock station, will send out its final radio waves today.

Our friends at The Daily Swarm broke this one today. After a tad more than five years on the air (the station shares its birthday with Jesus, only in 2003), the station is saying its goodbyes with a simple message on its homepage and one last day of broadcasting. From what we can tell the announcement is fairly sudden, and won’t sit well with the station’s loyal listeners — 103.1’s entry on Urban Dictionary simply says “The best fucking radio station in Los Angeles.”

While we couldn’t blame the economy for yesterday’s closure news, but we’re definitely blaming the man for this one. You can listen to the station’s final day of broadcasting live here — they’ve already got a live countdown going til the final hour.

Our hats off to you, Indie 103. You will be missed.

Unbelievable! This came as a total shock. I’ve been listening since close to the beginning and will seriously miss the station. Hopefully things won’t change when they go online… I wonder if Jonesy will stick around. Indie 103.1: “The best fucking radio station in Los Angeles.” Agreed.

  2. Alex Says:

This is absolutely heartbreaking – Indie was the only station I listened to in my car and it is by far and away the best radio station. I think this is a shocking and disappointing decision and I want to know why they are going off air – the internet is great and all, but I do not have access to that in my car. Can someone that knows what the real reason is for the shutdown please post?

  3. WIll Says:

I’m not sad this station is gone, you can’t claim to be indie and be owned by clear channel. Take it as an end to hypocrisy.

  4. Scott Says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOO. Cruel world indeed, I’ve been streaming indie from the east coast for four years now, ever since WHFS folded in Washington, DC. Man this is crappy news.

  5. James Says:

    Will… you’re a douche bag.

  7. WIll Says:

True, but that’s a separate argument.

  8. Smith Johnson Says:

Anyone have a recording of their farewell message?

  9. T Robles Says:

That company of ENTRAVISION were indie just to be, sucks big time, they kick out indie because they don’t care and they don’t want this kind of music and people, they just support ONLY the beaners that work there and all the beaners shows that they have on the air, Fuck that Scum Company (they never wive a fuck of indie) I bet that in a couple of months later in that same FREQ of 103.1 is going be more crap beaner music, that’s what they always planned to do.

If you like independent music check out Modern Science from Las Vegas. They just released their debut album and are rising up fast!
