For their ninth studio album, Seattle’s grunge-gods Pearl Jam are changing things up a bit. Piggybacking off the success of other aging superstars like Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead, the veterans of rock will be self-releasing their next studio album.
The band has been recording material for the new album — which is slated for release “later in 2009″ — since last summer, and will be working in the studio for a two-week session with producer Brenden O’Brien in upcoming weeks. Jeff Ament, bassist for Pearl Jam, told Billboard that the band is very enthused to be working with O’Brien once again, saying he’s “one of the few people outside of the band that we trust with our music and we’re really, really looking forward to making this record.” Pearl Jam and O’Brien haven’t exclusively collaborated since the release of 1998’s Yield.
Eddie Vedder also commented on the band’s progress, telling Rolling Stone that the new record will be “really strong and uptempo, stuff we can sink our teeth into.”
If you can’t stand the anticipation of waiting for a new Pearl Jam release, you can tide yourself over with the remastered/reissued version of 1991’s Ten, whose remix was overseen by O’Brien, or you could just catch Eddie Vedder in concert on April 4 in New York, where he will be performing alongside the likes of Paul McCartney and others.
