He helped set the standards for today’s sound of soul, R&B and hip-hop with his influential group, The Delfonics in the late 60s and early 70s, but sadly, founding member and singer Randy Cain unexpectedly passed away this past Thursday in his New Jersey home. He was 63.
Cain died at his residence in Maple Shade, New Jersey, but the cause of the death and other details have yet to be released. Cain, who formed The Delfonics in the 1960’s with William and Wilbert Hart was 63-years-old. The three men knew each other from childhood as they all attended Overbrook High School, in Philadelphia.
The Delfonics released their first album, La La Means I Love You in 1968, which the title song eventually became a staple that has been sampled by various hip-hop and R&B artists, including The Fugees, Notorious B.I.G and Nas. Cain left The Delfonics in 1971, and formed a new group, Blue Magic, in 1973.
“I’m gonna miss him. We grew up together since 1968,” Wilbert Hart told the Philadelphia Daily News.
