Lennon’s NYC Years Go On Display At Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Annex, Yoko Mails Acorns

Forty years after they planted acorns for peace in 1969, Yoko Ono is keeping she and John Lennon’s weird (though well-intentioned) work alive by mailing acorns to more than 100 world leaders. Meanwhile, back here on earth, an exhibition based on Lennon’s years in New York City will open next month at the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame Annex.

The exhibition, called ‘John Lennon: The New York City Years,’ will include artifacts from his life in the big apple, including photos, instruments, handwritten lyrics and artwork. Visitors will also see his Green Card and letters that petitioned for his American Visa, some written by Joan Baez, Dick Clark and even former NYC Mayor John Lindsay. And of course, no exhibit like this would be complete without his New York City tee shirt from the iconic photo.

Some of the proceeds from the exhibit will go to Spirit Foundations, a charity organization started by Lennon and Yoko. Hopefully she’ll be done with her mailing project in time to come and catch the exhibit — she has 123 world leaders to mail before then. Each one will receive a letter and two acorns, in a transparent box with the inscription “Acorn Peace by John and Yoko, Spring 2009.”

Lennon made mention of the first acorns for peace stunt in The Beatles’ song “The Ballad of John and Yoko”: ‘Caught the early plane back to London/Fifty acorns tied in a sack/The men from the press said, ‘We wish you success, it’s good to have the both of you back’.’
