When Seafood released their second full length When Do We Start
Fighting…, there was no reason to expect it to be much different than their 2000 debut.
That album was primarily comprised of five-minute-plus noise-a-thons, meandering about
raucously, but not with much purpose. Somewhere along the way, however, the quartet from a
variety of towns outside London found a box full of hooks and dropped it on top of their
album. All aspects of Seafood are evident on “Western Battle.” The noisy US-indie
side is still there, bringing to mind bits of Sonic Youth or even Shellac, but
now there are definite sing-a-long aspects hiding amongst the angular yet edgy guitar lines,
lending a hint of a method to the madness. Guess not everyone suffers from the sophomore
slump.
