“We ride with kings on mighty steeds across the Devil’s plain” are the welcoming words written inside of the Tenacious D’s highly anticipated self-titled debut album. The 666-Metal cover art brings back memories of the 1970’s heavy metal scene, with a slight comedic twist. That basically sums up the talented duo of big screen star Jack Black and Kyle Gass, metal + comedy = The Greatest Band Ever! The funniest thing about the album is not the well written skits, or the hilarious lyrical content, rather it’s the fact that Jack Black can really fucking sing (as he proved in his scene stealing moment in High Fidelity). Thanks to the production skills of The Dust Brothers, songs like “Wonderboy”, “Fuck Her Gently”, and “Friendship” really sound amazing, going miles beyond the band’s original joke premise. Dave Grohl, Page McConnell, Steve McDonald lent their respected instruments to this valuable recording. Tenacious D have something that Cheech and Chong or Spinal Tap did not (aside from better weed) – solid song writing skills. Turn off the lights, fire one up, and experience the D.
