Fantastic Plastic

You know how you read endless music reviews and the reviewer states that Band A
sounds like a mix of Band B and Band C and about 10% of the time you
agree and the other 90% of the time you wonder what the writer is on and where you might
be able to get some of it? Well, this is a crack-free zone, as “Casino,” the debut single from
upstart Devon quartet Buffseeds sounds EXACTLY like Mark Morriss of
the Bluetones fronting Muse. Not only that, but it’s one of the best singles
I’ve heard in 2002. Frontman Kieran Scragg (how’s THAT for a rock ‘n’ roll
name?) also has a Mark Greaney of JJ72 quality to his voice, so it follows
that JJ producer Ian Caple is working on the foursome’s debut full length,
on Fantastic Plastic. If atmospheric, emotive rock pairing soaring vocals with driving guitar
bits is your thing, you could do far, far worse than entering the “Casino” designed by Buffseeds. JEREMY P. GOLDSTEIN
