Elizabeth Elmoreís old day job was the voice for the indie rock outfit Sarge, who acquired a substantial following and dominance in the press (Spin, Playboy, Interview) in the late ë90s before their demise in 1999. Elmore created a new army of sound, featuring musicians from Sarge, Moreno, My Lai, and the avant-jazz collective Andiamo. The bandís self-titled debut features Jay Benett from Wilco, who also helped produce, along with Matt Allison (Alkaline Trio, The Lawrence Arms) and Mike Lust (Sweep The Leg Johnny). ìThe Stars Of Amateur Hourî is an extremely well-written track, which illuminates Elmoreís descriptive lyrics, like ìheated promises,î ìartless gluttony,î and ìbattered lipsî telling the tale of unforgettable encounter with the bottle. This nine-song disc stirs a variety of spices including post-hardcore, ë70s singer/songwriters, a slight touch of jazz and indie rock, and sounding something like the fallen Velocity Girl or Belly.
