Being from Iceland is THE COOLEST! Well, both literally and figuratively. It’s obviously a pretty
damn chilly place, but something is going on up there, considering it’s such a small country, and yet
it’s spawned The Sugarcubes/Bjork, Sigur Ros, Quarashi and now,
Leaves. Their prior single was in more of a Sigur Ros vein, but the newby, “Race,” is
a much more rocking affair from the quartet of best friends, who reside in their homeland’s capital of
Reykjavik. On “Race,” singer Arnar Gudjonsson (Icelandic peeps have THE COOLEST
names, too!) has a distinctly Ian McCulloch-circa-Elextrafixion vibe to his vocals, while the
music blends elements of Verve and Radiohead. Plus, Gudjonsson is the
striker on a third division soccer team that all of Leaves are on and he led the league in
scoring. Can you beat that? I didn’t think so.
