A trio from Glasgow, Scotland, where all members sing and two-thirds are fraternal twins sounds pretty interesting, doesn’t it? What if I told you that they rock angular guitar lines that sound on one hand like 1991 US college radio fare and on the other hand like the cousin of Nirvana. Got your attention yet? Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, presenting Biffy Clyro. The band rocks hooks by the truckload, yet at the still time is quite far from the mainstream. Easily mastering the quiet bit/loud bit that so many bands try and fail at, the trio are equally at home writing down-tempo balladry or driving, jumparound post-grunge guitar wigouts on Blackened Sky, usually in the same song. “Justboy,” which featured on CSP .028, is still as good as it was then, reminiscent of US indie acts Far or Knapsack. Despite the title, “Kill The Old, Torture The Young,” isn’t straight-up playing ’70s vinyl backwards, although the dual kick drums definitely rival any work by Lars Ulrich. “The Go-Slow” does for bits, but the exciting parts are the vaguely off-kilter, yet wholly catchy big guitars. If noisy, yet hook guitar music is your cup of tea, then you’re in London and it’s 4:00PM.
