Not every band has a cool, interesting story as to how they got their big break. Hell, most bands never get any sort of break, but thatís not so with The Stills. Only in their early twenties, the four members of The Stills have been playing together in various bands since the age of 12. An opportune trip to NYC last summer jumpstarted the bandís career when, at their very first gig (The Luna Lounge), four of the fifteen people in the audience happened to be the members of Interpol. The band were so impressed with The Stills that they asked the young Canadians to open for them a few days later at the Bowery Ballroom and have been championing them ever since. A four-song EP, released through the relatively new Vice Records label followed and featured the soon-to-be smash, ìStill In Love Song,î a song their debut full length, Logic Will Break Your Heart, would be created around. The 12-song debut, also released trough Vice, was one of my most anticipated releases of 2003, and it still exceeded my expectations. From the album opener (and UK single) ìLola Stars And Stripesî to ìYesterday Never Tomorrows,î the last song, Logic Will Break Your Heart is a triumph. Much like their friends in Interpol, The Stills have released a debut album that contains no ìskip overî tracks. From start to finish, the album dives forward, drawing inspiration from bands like Echo & The Buynnymen and The Cure, though it never come across as thoughtlessly derivative. The production is also a work of art. In fact, after the other album tracks were finished, the band had to stay in the studio to re-record ìStill And Love Songî because it was being noticeably overshadowed by the newer songs. With critics understandably drooling all over this album, and their inclusion in countless ìbands to watch in 2004î lists, The Stills are poised to become a household name in the new year. If you still have yet to hear this record, go see what all the fuss is about. You wonít be disappointed.
