Brooklyn-based twenty-something quartet Ambulance Ltd. released their debut EP on TVT last summer to a great deal of critical acclaim. They spent some time on the road honing their skills and then headed back into the studio to create their self-titled debut album. Four of the songs from the band’s initial release were received so well that the band re-recorded them for inclusion on the LP. Twelve tracks in all, the new release pulls its influences from all the right places – The Beatles (as can be heard in the refrain of “Heavy Lifting”), Spiritualized (”Swim”), and The Velvet Underground, to whom they paid the ultimate compliment: a cover of the Lou Reed-penned tune “The Ocean” appears as the album’s final cut. It’s also my favorite song on the album, but probably because of my creepy love affair with the Velvet Underground. “Primitive” is the first single, but the self-titled LP is filled with diverse, quality tunes. Check out “Heavy Lifting,” “Anecdote,” and “Young Urban” as you’re perusing this disc. You’ll be glad you did.
