Sometimes the recipes in rockís kitchen are a little more complex than others. For Blonde Redhead, the cookbook read as follows: throw together a pair of Italian twins, originally from Milan and relocated to Montreal, add a female Japanese singer from Kyoto but now in New York City, mix in some off-kilter melodies and dissonance, a good shake of Eau De Sonic Youth and cook for ten years. After cooking, what remains is new album Misery Is A Butterfly . The Blonde Redhead vibe has changed much in the decade theyíve existed, as now cinematics have been pushed way up and the dissonance way down. Album opener ìElephant Womanî begs for inclusion on the soundtrack of some new French film, while throughout the record singerKazu Makinoís lilting melodies are particularly engaging, while co-vocalist Amadeo Pace evokes Sigur Ros with his otherworldly vocals, especially on ìMessenger.î Album closer ìEquusî is especially catchy, as the chanted chorus of ìallow me to show you, the way which I adore youî is multi-barbed and looking for somewhere in your head to stick. Ten years is a long time, but the ëRedhead may now finally get their due. Good for them.
