Suburban Rock ‘N’ Roll

Wow. Talk about a blast from the past. After releasing the stellar Spiders in 1996, featuring the minor radio hit ìFemale Of The Species,î as well as equally enthralling numbers like ìNeighborhood,î and ìMe And You Vs. The World,î Space took a couple of years in writing their follow-up, Tin Planet. Although it featured a few decent tracks, like ìBallad Of Tom Jones,î and ìAvenging Angels,î Tin Planet never was released in the US and the band faded from public consciousness. Fast forward to 2004, and the Liverpudlian quartet are trying to remind you of their off-kilter pop craftiness. On Suburban Rock ëNí Roll, Space prove they havenít lost the ability to combine jangly guitars and tongue-in-cheek lyrics with a sweeping, cinematic vibe. The albumís title track evokes thoughts of ìFemale,î while a synth-heavy power-pop angle is at the forefront on ìZombies.î ìPunk Rock Funeralî is another keeper, with relying heavily on frontman Tommy Scott ís delivery, but with the tune fleshed out by the omnipresent samples and keyboard tweaks, while ìHellís Barbecueî is another tasty atmospheric jam, cinematically filling your headspace. Suburban Rock ëní Roll may not top the charts, but if Spiders was a favorite in 1996 and 1997, thereís no reason that this yearís model wonít tickle your fancy in much the same way.
