What do members of two established Midwestern indie rock outfits do after their respective bands call it quits? Well, if youíre Davey von Bohlen and Dan Didier of the Promise Ring and Eric Axelson of the Dismemberment Plan, you join forces to form a new Midwestern indie rock outfit called Maritime. When Maritime recorded this album, they were actually called In English and they werenít recording it for Desoto. They had signed a deal with a West Coast rock & roll concern that fronted them enough cash to land producer J. Robbins and record in a decent studio. However, when they finished the 13-song set of beautiful hook-laden, horn and string-layered songs, the unnamed label decided that it wasnít good enough. Oops. So the band regrouped, changed their name, called their friends at Desoto to help them put it out and the rest is history. Songs like “Someone Has To Die,” “Sleep Around” and “We’ve Got To Get Out” will definitely appeal to the Promise Ring’s devoted legions as well as a whole new group of young people looking for insightful, creative lyrics and infectious melodies.
