Louisville, Kentucky spawned a monster with disco ball eyes and an insatiable desire to dance, and that beast is VHS Or Beta. Unlike many of the other danceable new wave revival rock bands infiltrating our CD players, VHS Or Beta captures the retro/disco sound while maintaining their own identity. Their stunning Astralwerks debut CD Night On Fire will easily please fans of bands ranging from Daft Punk to Echo & The Bunneymen. The second track on the disc, “You Got Me”, sounds as if the spirit of Duran Duran possessed their souls to help create a mascara coated 80’s pop song. Several cuts, including “No Cabaret”, could easily have fit on The Cure’s Japanese Whispers. It is difficult not to notice lead singer Craig Pfunder’s vocal similarities to Robert Smith. Fortunately, Pfunder is able to use Smith more as a muse instead of a crutch. The ability to perfectly fuse dance and rock is not easy to pull off successfully, but VHS Or Beta has done just that. Grab this CD, crank up your fog machine, and prepare to shake it like you mean it.
