Bangzilla is Mix Master Mike’s exploration of sci-fi films through the ones and twos. It is a known fact that nobody can scratch like the DJ behind the Beastie Boys. Living proof that turntables indeed are musical instruments, he sets his wheels of steel in motion with a barrage of random sources as he pieces together the patchwork of beats and scratches that make up this record. MMM’s career got a kick start during his days as a member of the infamous DJ collective The Invisibl Skratch Piklz. The turntable wizard quickly caught the attention of the B-Boys, making him a household name thanks to “Three MCs And One DJ”, Bangzilla is his fourth solo record, and is his finest work to date. Tracks like “Magnet” show MMM as the conductor of a vinyl symphony, layering strings, b-movie dialogue, and fat beats to create tracks suitable for fans of The Roots to followers of Star Trek. “Blow Dart” is the first cut to really break from the mold, taking a darker tone similar to a stripped down DJ Shadow. From classic hip hop to Buck Rogers, somehow he makes it all work out. Mix Master Mike makes the crossfader his bitch, and the world is a better place because of it.
