Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants has found his way into the lives of kids of all ages, and he seems to have two missions: to prepare the finest krabby patties around, and to share some mighty fine alt-rock. At first glance, the soundtrack for The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie appears to be your typical kid-friendly album. But after a second look, is that the Flaming Lips I see? And Wilco? And The Shins? Damn right! The Flaming Lips contribution to the soundtrack is “SpongeBob & Patrick Confront The Psychic Wall Of Energy”, which kicks off with the sound of bubbles and an instantly catchy melody. It is pop that only Wayne Coyne & Co. can create. Next up is the brand new Wilco track “Just A Kid”, which utilizes the patented SpongeBob line “I’m ready!” This shows a playful side of Jeff Tweedy that we typically don’t get to see. You’ll quickly find yourself grinning and nodding your head to the infectious songs, from Ween’s classic “Ocean Man” to SpongeBob singing “The Best Day Ever”. Sometimes you need an album that isn’t deep, dark, or thought provoking. In fact, the only thing deep and dark about Music From The Movie And More… is that the songs are about the ocean. It is just good clean fun for the young, and the young at heart.
