“Everybody do the hokey-pokey to the crackhouse blues.” Ah yes, the unique blend of wit, humor, and indie rock that is Adam Green. He has returned with his third solo record, titled Gemstones. Upon listening to this record, the first thing you might notice is the absence of strings, which filled his previous album Friends Of Mine. In the place of orchestration is a much more straightforward, road tested collection of songs that will please fans both old and new. The record opens up with the title track, which blazes through folk, rock, marches, and various other genres at various tempos in only 2:24. Only Adam Green could take us on such a varied journey in the course of one song while still making it cohesive. While the song titles “Choke On A Cock” and “Chubby Princess” might grab your attention, make sure you give “Emily” a good listen. The song sounds innocent enough, until you catch the lyrics “Emily sweet baby won’t you be my wife, cutting me wide open with a kitchen knife”. His music has grown and matured since his days in The Moldy Peaches, writing some of the most captivatingly bizarre lyrics you’ll find anywhere. Green has given us a pop gem with a f*cked up sense of humor that will add a bit of light to our dreary winter days.
