I propose that a new radio format should be created for artists such as Doves. Call it what you like, but I like “intelligent alternative”. Rock this good deserves the attention of the masses. Doves are back with their finest record to date, Some Cities. This highly anticipated album takes the brilliance of 2002’s The Last Broadcast, and somehow improves on their near genius formula. I wasn’t sure this was possible, but it is. From the opening chords of the first track, which is also the title track, it is obvious that this band fucking rules. This marks the first time they have opened up an album with no filler, no into, just right into the drums & guitar. It is this straight-ahead approach that has taken Doves to a whole new level. The lead single, “Black and White Town”, is catchy as hell, with a stomping beat, pounding keys and a melody that will loop endlessly in your head. “Snowden” is an epic track that begins with a simple melody around xylophone, which builds to a soaring climax of strings, distorted guitars, and Jimi Goodwin’s powerful vocals. Doves have also mastered the art of dynamics, such as on “Sky Stars Falling”. The tune trucks along with ticking metronome-like drums, exploding into a sea of reverb coated guitars. The mental image this gives me is that of a day in Manchester, which is the band’s hometown. The sun rises with the opening track. The album goes through the bustle of a day in an urban city. The sun then sets with the closing track “Ambition”. I could go on and on about each song from this fantastic record, but I don’t want to spoil it for you. Could this be the best album of the year? Granted we have 11 months left in 2005, but Doves have set the bar quite high.
