Why is it that some of the best albums that come out overseas wait in what seems like an eternity to come out over here? I guess I shouldn’t complain, because at least they do come out…eventually. One of these albums is the sophomore effort from New York’s Joy Zipper, that is coming out February 22 via the newly created Dangerbird Records. When one listens to Joy Zipper it is easy to lose sight and fall back on what others have said about the album. Yes, it does sound like Brian Wilson playing nice with the likes of Belle & Sebastian, and yes, there is also a dream like quality in the vein of Air. Don’t let these comparisons confuse you though because Joy Zipper manages to hold their own and create some of the most beautiful music that I have heard in the last year. My favorite track hands down is “Dosed & Became Invisible” where haunting lyrics and luscious melodies could fill any empty room. The single, “Christmas Song”, also possesses the same dreamy quality of the rest of the album. However, the keyboards at times are very Stereolab, which is a good thing. Another standout track is “33X” where the listener cant help but hum along with singer Tabitha Tindale’s smooth vocals. All in all you really can’t go wrong with this album. One thing is for certain; don’t miss these guys at SXSW this year. If you can’t make it to Texas, then be sure and catch them on the road with Phoenix and Dogs Die In Hot Cars this spring.
